September 23, 2009: Since Paige joined us in November of 2008 we have been so busy keeping up with new material from her and Jacqui, as well as trying to revamp and modernize the site, that many of you have noticed much of the older material was missing. We started to correct that problem recently with repostings of Jacqui's earlier work, and today we are staring to get Brian's photos and video galleries back online and get ready for some new material from him soon.
I had my first opportunity to wear professionally-made KAFOs out in public back on the weekend of November 30th/December 1st, 2001. I wore a borrowed pair of taupe leather and steel KAFOs for a weekend in Virginia Beach, and had a great time walking around town and having dinner in a nice seafood spot right on the ocean. The photos in the black shorts were taken that weekend, and the denim cut-offs were from a few weeks later back at home.
Don't have too many photos from those days, and didn't really have the opportunity to have braces again until we started Jacqui's Place in 2005. Later, with a new digital camera to get better photos, there were some experimental KAFOs before my next real pair from Bob... the first being a pair of black KAFOs we found on eBay for a very reasonable price. They looked like they would be a good fit for both Jacqui and Me based on the description, so when they came I tried them on.
September 24: When the braces were on it became apparent that they weren't as good a fit as I had hoped. They were made for someone a little shorter, and with heavier legs... it wasn't possible to tighten the straps for good support, so I made inner liners for each of the cuffs using some padding material covered with black leather as a "shim". Once they were ready I tried them out at the same Riverfront Park that Jacqui and Paige have used as a backdrop to their photos...
September 25: It was nice to be out for a "Test Run" in the braces, but by the time we were ready to head home it was apparent they were not going to be a good choice for me. We'll have the photos up shortly of Jacqui's trials in them as well, but they never fit either of us well enough to keep, and so they were sold to someone who could put them to better use shortly after these photos were taken.
It was disappointing not to have a pair of KAFOs that would work well for me, but it was still a very enjoyable day out. That wraps up the black brace photos, and we'll get the video posted soon. Next time you'll see the next attempt at getting me some KAFOs that fit! Meanwhile, here's a video clip of me trying out those braces on the deck... VIEW VIDEO
